Who We Are
The Salvation Army, an evangelical part of the universal Christian church established in 1865, has been supporting those in need in His name without discrimination for 130 years in the United States. Nearly 30 million Americans receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year through the broadest array of social services that range from providing food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter to the homeless and opportunities for underprivileged children. Eighty-two cents of every dollar spent is used to support those services in 5,000 communities nationwide.
What We Do
Motivated by the love of God, as a leader in Christian faith-based human services, The Salvation Army is committed to serve the whole person, body, soul and spirit, with integrity and respect, using creative solutions to positively transform lives. Its objectives are the advancement of the Christian religion, education, the relief of poverty and other charitable objectives beneficial to society or the community of mankind as a whole. Whether it is shelter for a displaced family or a warm cup of coffee for our bravest and finest?hope and healing is the message of The Salvation Army. Since 1886, The Salvation Army has been providing social and spiritual services to communities throughout the world. People given purpose, hearts given hope and souls finding redemption?this has been our mission for more than a century. To effectively minister and serve within such a large area, the New Jersey Division has 28 Corps Worship & Community Centers which are the most basic service components of The Salvation Army, providing religious and social services adapted to the needs of their communities. The New Jersey Division also has the Newark Ironbound Boys & Girls and Senior Center, one residential camp (Tecumseh) in Pittstown, NJ, three shelters (Elizabeth, Montclair and Perth Amboy) and 137 service units (comprised of approximately 700 volunteers who administer Salvation Army services where there is no Army facility). In addition to Corps Worship & Community Centers and service extension units, there are four Adult Rehabilitation Centers and approximately 20 Salvation Army Thrift (or Family) Stores. Proceeds from Thrift Stores support the Adult Rehabilitation Centers throughout the state.
